On holidays (and often in life) the least planned and most surprising spots, the places you visit and find by chance, coincidence or simply by taking a wrong turn somewhere, end up being the most memorable and magical ones. Babylonstoren was recommended to us by a friend and we literally booked our stay only a couple of days before heading to Cape Town. Only one hour drive away from the city, you reach the vineyards of the Cape and it’s just as beautiful as you imagine. A long valley, the rocky Franschoeck mountains and one winery next to the other. Babylonstoren is one of the oldest farms in the area, dating back to 17th century, the various buildings have been beautifully renovated and are furnished with contemporary furnishings and modern art. Lunch at Babel restaurant was a real experience itself, with a menu created from what is currently available in the garden! Almost everything in the large grounds is edible – the perfect scenario with an ever exploring toddler in tow. We loved it so much, we stayed for two nights instead of just one and we will definitely be back.
The rooms at Babylonstoren are beautifully furnished and the mix of modern designer pieces within the old walls of the little traditional cottages work so well. We stayed in a cute little house with a separate bedroom, living room and a modern glass extension in the back with a large timber dining table and little kitchen. In the evening one of the lovely staff lit a fire in the open fireplace for us, brought around a cheese platter (bottles of their own red, white and rose wines are offered complimentary in the rooms!) and almost even better – a heated cushion to cuddle up to in the cold African nights.
